Pheasants and Phantoms: Szigeti Tamás at A38

In his latest yearly exhibition at A38, Szigeti Tamás offers his familiar large canvases with an ambiguous play of light and surface painting. The series Valahol while using similar techniques appear more painterly than printerly in contrast to his previous exhibitions. The exhibition consists of landscapes with disparate seemingly incongruous elements such as a pile of pig heads on the forest floor or the heads of soldiers peeking out from under a pond full of lily pads. These anomalies give the paintings a bit of an edge which is the artist’s stated intention as he was attempting to produce “urban landscapes” which he views as inherently false.
